Not a whole lot is given away about Marilla's past. She was never married and lives with her brother Matthew at Green Gables Farm. Physically, she looks very stern. It helps emphasize her moral and emotional severity. But don't be fooled! Marilla is truly a loving person who actually does have a sense of humor as well as moments of obvious kindness. While she tends to be very strict with Anne, Marilla acts out of love for her adopted daughter. Anne helps change Marilla a bit. She brings out Marilla's softer side and by the end of the play Marilla is able to express her kinder emotions.
